Dear PQ,

 

Thank you for your help yesterday.  You have no idea how much of a blessing you are to me and your father.  There are times when we are knee deep in a sticky situation and you unknowingly come to our rescue.  I wonder if you really know how helpful you can be?  Over the past several months, we have seen a change in you and...

No Fear

My Boy Heads To The 'Other Side'

 

When was the last time you realized how fast your children are growing?  For me, it was this past weekend.  PQ has been talking about 'needing new shoes' for a few weeks and I have been pushing it off, knowing that we just bought him new shoes a few months ago.  After feeling the tip of his toe at the end of his shoes, we realized that he must have had a growth spurt so we headed to the local outlets to find him some new sneakers.  And much to our surprise, our little guy is growing UP!

 

PQ scoped out a few pairs of high-tops that he liked at the Adidas outlet.  We asked the sales associate to measure his foot to be sure that we were looking for the right size for him.  My boys went around the corner to have PQ's feet measured and within a few minutes they came back to the kids section and told me that we needed to go to the 'other side' of the store.  I was completely taken by surprise.  The 'other side' of the store is the mens section.  Why would my little guy need to head to the 'other side"?  OH NO...WAIT...SAY IT ISN'T SO...ARE YOU TELLING ME WHAT I THINK YOU'RE TELLING ME??!!??  (Please excuse this interuption while I have a panic attack...)

 

My little boy is officially wearing MAN sizes!

(Did I mention that prices go UP substantially on the 'other side' of the store?)

YIKES!

 

Nine years old and wearing mens sneakers.  YIKES...I can't even imagine how big our little guy is going to be when he's a teenager.  He certainly takes after his Papa.  (And just for the record...I'm still freaking out about the fact that MY BABY is shopping on the 'other side'...the same side as my husband...tell me it aint so...)

Planet Pizza Trivia

 

QUESTION: If the sun was 144 inches (12 feet), then how big would the other planets be?

Saturn is on the left (12 inches) with a "ring" of mushrooms...

Jupiter is on the right (14.79 inches) with a red pepper "red spot".

 

 

 

From the top left to right is Mercury (.50 inch)...

Next is Venus (1.25 inches)...

Earth is up next with blueberry oceans, broccoli land, and cheese clouds (1.32 inches)...

and Mars is topped with red sauce (.70 inch)

 

And the larger pizzas are:

Uranus (4.86 inches) topped with blueberry sauce...

and Neptune (4.70 inches) topped with blueberry sauce, cheese, and a blueberry "blue spot".

Unit Study: Astronomy

PQ recently began a new Unit Study of his choice.  With a long list of possibilities, he opted to start studying Astronomy.  He recently finished up a small project for Conqueror's Club on the Solar System so his curiosity had been peeked.  So, a Unit Study on Astronomy seemed like the next logical thing to do!  Climb on board our rocket ship and explore the Universe with us.  Over the next several days, we will be exploring Astronomy (not be confused with Astrology).  I hope you enjoy the ride.  *wink*

 

 

With any Unit Study, there are several vocabulary words that need to be cleared up along the way.  When our study began, PQ had to look up words like 'revolving', 'gravity', and 'atmosphere'.  We will start here for now...but I promise that the vocabulary lessons will continue.  So please be sure to check back to test your skills.

 

 

Revolving...Gravity...Atmosphere...

 

 

 

There's no better way to drive home a concept than with an opportunity to act it out.

(The Lamp was our Sun and we were the planets...and we revolved around the sun)

 

Question: How long does it take for the Earth to revolve around the sun?

Answer: 365 days

 

 

 

 

What makes Day & Night?

PQ found out by using his globe and the sun (aka: the desk lamp)

 

 

 

 

And what about gravity?!?

Was Aristotle right when he said that heavier objects will drop faster?

 

 

 

PQ used Galileo's Gravity Experiment several times to test the theory.

(You'll have to try it yourself to find the answer...)

 

 

 

 

 

The moon doesn't have an atmosphere.

PQ dropped meteorites (aka: marshmallows) onto the moons surface.

 

 

 

 

 

PQ quickly realized that God designed our Earth to have an atmosphere (the Earth is the only planet that has an atmosphere) because He protects us. We are the only planet that has life on it and God designed our planet to have an atmosphere. If the earth didn't have an atmosphere, our planet would look like this as well.  Think about the people.  Think about the homes. 

All crushed.

 

A random coincidence? We think not.

Happy New Year!

 

 HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYONE!  Last night's festivities were full of food, fun, and fellowship.  It was a GREAT way to ring in the New Year, that's for sure.  A HUGE thank you to Twirly and Offroader for hosting all of us.  We all had a great time and it would not have been possible without them and their hospitality!  Thanks again!

 

The night began with lots of food being prepped and displayed.  If anyone left the party hungry, it was their own fault because their was more than enough food for everyone.  The night continued with games for the kids (and a 'man-game' near the end of the night) along with singing songs (on top of Old Smokie all covered in cheese, right Fletch?!? *wink*)

She wasn't allowed on the stairs leading to the 2nd floor.

Poor Sugar...life is rough when you're 16 months old!

Where did the time go?  Last night I caught a glimpse of Izzy Sunshine and I thought for sure that I was looking into the face of a pre-teen girl.  She's beautiful and she's changing each and every day.

The Adult Red Sox Swap...and swap...and swap...and swap.

(I really liked this new version...thanks for sharing it with us.)

We all know how much Sugar likes to be included, right?

She didn't want to sleep (for fear of missing something) even though she was EXHAUSTED!

So at one point near the end of the night, she put herself to bed in the wooden play cradle for her babies.  It was absolultely priceless.

And what happens when someone gets overtired?

They get silly....and Sugar was in RARE form.

She continuously made her 'cute face' and made everyone giggle.

CUTE FACE...she made you smile, Mama Sunshine!

Papa Fletch was eyeing Sugar's fuzzy slippers all night.

(But don't worry...all of our husbands showed up with their own slippers to wear...I think this might have been one of my favorite moments of the night...realizing that all of our husbands brought their slippers to the party.  "You know you're old when..."  *WINK*)

CRAFT TIME...it's was a great way to wrap up 2012!
